Biography
Nature from the over 40 countries that Loreen has traveled to provides the inspiration for her art. Her most recent work ventures beyond realism by placing a greater focus on repetitive mark-making and a limited, or even monochromatic, palette, focusing the viewer's attention on the pattern itself.
Loreen's latest body of work initially evokes the microscopic biological world but, with a shift in vantage point, scale escalates to encapsulate the vastness of the cosmos. Overlapping strokes lead the viewer's eye through a continuous infinity knot as the viewer's gaze travels the endless path. Wide sweeping strokes of paint mimic the rhythm of ocean waves and distinct colors begin to blur as paint gets dragged across the surface. Repetitive ribbons of color create a lattice expanding and contracting across the canvas. Spontaneity and a celebration of the freshness of the initial stroke are prioritized over perfection.
Loreen works in various mediums, including water colors, ink, acrylic and oil paint, but the linear repetition inspired by nature is the essence. While her work is grounded in realism, it is distilled to the essential patterns and lines that lie within.
Originally from Romania, Loreen immigrated as a child to New Jersey with her family. She graduated from Cornell University with a dual degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, followed by a Masters of Architecture from Pratt Institute. Art and design have been instilled in her from a young age, and she is a third generation architect and artist.
