Biography
Mimmi Montán grew up in a small fishing village in Sweden. Restlessness hit her early in life and she became eager to leave the place she was from. At the age of 18 she moved to London and two years after that she moved once again to Toronto, Canada, where she resided for four years before heading back to Sweden.
Coming from a family of artists, Montán was always encouraged to create art both process driven and conceptual. This encouragement led her to photography, a medium in which she worked in for 12 years. Although Montán always painted, it was something that she thought of more for her eyes only. Eventually, painting seemed to her a natural progression from her photography and she gave into it completely.
Montán's paintings consist of landscapes. Her starting point is the visual impression which she then channels into her work, constructing many layers. With a sense of modernism to cut excess detail she often emphasizes the simple shapes and surfaces of the subject, so that it is first and foremost the peculiar, overall luminous effect of the landscape that hits the viewer. In her abstract but straight-forward way she wants the many layers of paint to be an invitation into her nostalgic, unrooted world. Montán's paintings represent the empty rooms she has inhabited and the people she has met along the way.
