Biography
Daniel Diaz-Tai's exuberant canvases are borne of his unique, multicultural heritage and upbringing. Raised between Venezuela, China and the United States, the artist is heavily influenced by a multiplicity of artistic and linguistic currents. His work seeks to communicate his experience of living in these three vastly different societies, creating a figurative language through which he can convey his disparate cultural journeys.
The most palpable characteristic of Diaz-Tai's compositions is their vigorous, almost frenetic, energy. The artist approaches each work without a preconceived outline of their composition, but rather allows instinct and impulse to dictate their structure. Working within a monochromatic scale, he uses mixed media including graphite, sumi ink, oil and charcoal, to bring to life richly textured and demonstrative pieces. His aesthetic bridges disciplines across graphic design and fine art, melding the use of calligraphy with painting to create a decidedly distinctive visual style.
Asemic language, the use of wordless, nonspecific writing, permeates Diaz-Tai's work. In using this technique the artist removes the inherent meaning of words and phrases, giving viewers the opportunity to create their own fluid interpretation of the script. In his own words, "asemic language frees us from the confines of translation in order to deliver something richer."
